    Poster for AASFrom English settlers on the coast, German settlers establishing Orangeburg in the Back Country, an inclusive Fundamental Constitution, and vast numbers of African slaves selected because of their specialized skill for growing rice, South Carolina has a rich history that has always included a diverse population. African Americans are a vast part of this history. This course is designed for students that want to gain a better understanding of the rich history of African Americans in the United States with a focus on the achievements of African Americans in the state of South Carolina. The teaching of African and African American History and culture incorporates the contributions, culture and influences of Africans and African Americans in shaping the United States and the world. Students will gain an appreciation and knowledge of one of the largest ethnic minorities in the United States.
