Below you will find some important information about our first grade class expectations during the school year:

    Welcome to First Grade!!!

Welcome to first grade at Warrenville Elementary!  I am sure this will be a wonderful year and a great experience for you and your child.  My goal for this year is for your child to learn everything he/she needs to know to be successful in first grade.  In doing so, you, the parent, must be informed of my expectations.  Therefore, I will explain the classroom procedures and routines.  If, at any time, you are unclear, PLEASE let me know.  You can write me a note, send a message on Dojo, give me a call (803) 663-4270 or email me at lharling@acpsd.net.  I always enjoy talking with you about your child.  My philosophy is that the more informed and involved you are, the more successful your child will be!

Reading/Writing: We will be having a 45-minute Reading Workshop and a 45-minute Writing Workshop every day. Both workshops include a mini lesson, independent reading/writing time/guided reading time and a share time. Phonics and word study skills will be taught and practiced during our Word Block time. There will be a reading test at the end of each week.

Language Arts: We will learn grammar, writing conventions and punctuation during our Writing Workshop time.  Rubrics will be used to assess these skills used during the Writing Workshop.

Math: We will complete a math lesson every day, and we will have a math test at the end of each math unit based on the skills taught in that unit.  There may be some occasions where the math test will be given on a different day of the week than Friday. If this is the case, it will be listed on the homework sheet.  Please pay close attention to the homework sheet in the agenda.  It will give exact dates for tests.

Science/Social Studies: These subjects will be covered in class daily.  There will not be any tests or homework requirements.

Homework: Your child will bring home a homework folder and agenda daily.  There will be a homework sheet for the week stapled inside the agenda explaining the week’s homework.

Math Homework: We will complete a math lesson every day.  A math homework sheet will go home each night. This sheet will be based on the lesson we did that day in class. I will NEVER send home homework on something I have not taught. We will have a math test at the end of each chapter.  This will usually be on Friday, but not always.  Please pay close attention to the homework sheet.  It will give exact dates for tests.

Reading Homework: Your child will have a small take-home book on his/her reading level every night (except Friday). It is so important that your child reads this book to someone. After he/she has read the book to you, please initial the homework sheet in the agenda.  It is imperative that your child reads the small books.  Readers become good readers by practicing EVERY DAY!

Please make sure you check the homework folder and agenda daily for any additional information being sent home.  There is no homework on Friday.

Grades and Progress Reports: I will send graded test papers home every Tuesday from the Friday before.  Please sign the weekly progress report and return it to school in your child’s folder.  You may keep the papers. I will try to inform you daily of your child’s behavior by placing a smile, a straight face or frowny face in the agenda.  I will let you know of any problems as well by writing in the agenda.  Please feel free to use the agenda as a means of communication.  Every 4½ weeks, an interim report will be sent home informing you of your child’s current average grade.  This will need to be signed and returned.

Please feel free to call, email, or message me on Dojo with any questions or concerns throughout the school year. I am very excited about this year, and I am looking forward to getting to spend each day with your child.

    Thank you,

    Mrs. Harling
