The QEP describes a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and/or student success. Aiken Technical Colleges QEP is READ, WRITE, ACHIEVE! Its goals are to increase student awareness and utilization of student support services; to improve transition and success rates for students moving from RWR 032 to ENG 101 and ENG 160; and to improve student reading and writing outcomes. It is a multi-year plan and this years phase will promote student support services, such as Academic Counseling, Tutoring, and Library Resources. Please connect with the Student Success Center staff in Room 770 or the Learning Resource Center Staff in Room 1001 for details on support services offered. Note there is also a direct link to the Student Success Center Online at the top of the Blackboard main page. Attendance and Withdrawal Policy This is a skills course taught both in-person and online. It is vital that you attend (if enrolled in hybrid section) and log in regularly to keep up with course assignments and activities designed to hone the reading, writing, and revision skills you are building. Frequent, active, and high-quality participation is imperative for your learning and success. Please note that in order to remain enrolled in the course, you must not miss more than 10% of the course content. Failure to complete an academic activity (assignment submission, quiz, discussion board, etc.) in the course for 10 days (consecutive or cumulative) will result in withdrawal for non-attendance. If you anticipate being unable to log in and/or attend regularly or if an emergency arises, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss your plans for getting back on track in the course. You will receive a grade of W if withdrawing before midterm (Feb. 26th). You will receive a grade of either W or WF, depending on your grades, if withdrawing after midterm. You may request a withdrawal by contacting the instructor via email or phone. Please note that if you log in during the first week of class but do not submit any assignments, you will be considered a No-Show and be dropped from the course. General Grading and Course Policies Course Announcements and Instructor Communication: Please attend to announcements, videos, documents, and other resources posted on the course Blackboard site. In addition to the course outline and schedule, be attentive to any changes or reminders communicated through the Blackboard course. Also feel free to contact your instructor with any questions. When emailing, please use your Aiken Tech email address to avoid your message being filtered out by the campus email system. If you do not receive a reply within two business days, please try calling or sending another email in case your message was not received. Submission: Always attend to submission guidelines for individual assignments. Some assignments (such as workshop drafts, outlines, etc.) will need to be submitted in discussion forums and/or shared in class. Other assignments (such as final copies) must be submitted in the Assignments or Essays section of the course. In addition, formal writing assignments will be checked for plagiarism using TurnitIn. An assignment is considered on time only if it is submitted by the deadline in accordance with the requirements for that particular assignment. Format: Complete all essay assignments in MLA format using Microsoft Word. Font should be Times New Roman, size 12. Double-space all text. Submit assignments in .doc or .docx file format. As an Aiken Tech student, you have access to the online version of Microsoft Office via a link in the top left hand corner of your ATC email page. Please let me know if you need help accessing this resource. Quizzes over course readings, writing and revision strategies, editing skills, citation standards, and other course content will be given periodically throughout the course. The best way to prepare is to complete all course assignments (including assigned reading) on time and to pay close attention to course material. Taking notes as you read is highly recommended. Discussion Forums will ask you to reflect on various topics and engage with your classmates ideas. Be sure to attend closely to the instructions for each individual forum and to engage your critical thinking, reading, and writing skills when posting and replying. When participating in discussion forums, always keep your tone and content respectful and appropriate for an academic setting. Virtual Office Hours via Blackboard Collaborate are available to virtual and in-person students upon request. Please email to schedule a time. You are also welcome to schedule an in-person meeting during the times that I am on campus. Plagiarism: Every assignment submitted will be checked for plagiarism via Turnitin. If you have any questions about how to cite outside sources properly, consult your textbook and/or contact me. I will not grade any assignment with a Turnitin percentage over 25%; however, you will be able to see your percentage, correct any citation issues, and resubmit your paper until the deadline. Please note, however, that Turnitin will limit the number of submissions permitted in 24 hours. The best time to ask whether you have cited sources correctly is well before an assignment is due. See your student handbook for information about Aiken Techs policies regarding plagiarism. Late Work: Please submit all assignments on time. You dont want to fall behind in the course! If you experience a situation that prevents you from turning in an assignment on time, you have the option of submitting one formal writing assignment or test late this term provided the following criteria are met: The late assignment is submitted within one week of the original due date. The late assignment is submitted via Blackboard in the column labeled late submission. Assignments eligible for this provision are the formal writing assignments, tests, and research project. Discussion forums and reading quizzes may not be submitted late. Instead, the lowest grade in each of these two categories will be dropped. The final exam essay is not eligible for this provision. Once you have used your one late submission, you may not submit any further late assignments without penalty. Further late submissions will be penalized 5% for every 24 hours they are turned in after the deadline. *Absolutely no work may be submitted after the last day of ATC classes April 27th. *Please note that if you miss a unit test, you are responsible for contacting me immediately upon returning to class to arrange a time to make up the test. Failure to arrange a make-up within one week of returning will result in a grade of 0 on the test. *Students who never use their free late or unacceptable submission assignments may redeem each of them for 2 extra credit points on the final exam (up to 4 points total). Please note that turning in two late papers or two unacceptable submissions disqualifies you from receiving extra credit points for either category. 9.) Revision Opportunity Students may revise the fiction essay assigned this semester and resubmit it for a higher grade. In order to submit a revision, you must do the following: Submit the revision to the designated revision assignment in Blackboard no later than midnight on February 2nd. Make substantive changes in the revision beyond simply correcting editing issues. With the revision, include a paragraph explaining the new thinking and writing that went into the new version. Discuss specific ways the essay has been improved and point to particular moments in the essay that demonstrate higher quality work. *The following are not eligible for revision: late papers (free or penalized) and papers that have already gone through the unacceptable submission process. 10.) Unacceptable Submissions: Assignment submissions that radically fail to meet the assignment requirements cannot be graded. Examples of such situations include the following: Submission is not in the requested genre (For example, the assignment was an essay, but the student has submitted only an outline; or the assignment was a research paper, but the student has submitted an argument essay with no research information incorporated). Submission is not in the correct file format (.doc or .docx). Submission does not respond to the correct instructions (For example, the essay is written about reading assignments not listed on the syllabus and not given as options for this particular assignment). Submission features gross errors in citation that make determining which information came from which source nearly impossible (i.e. no parenthetical notes) and/or Turnitin percentage is over 25%. Submission uses outside resources when such use was specifically prohibited for that particular assignment. Submission uses unacceptable outside resources that are neither scholarly nor credible (i.e. Wikipedia, Sparknotes, 123helpme, some random persons blog, etc.). If a submission falls into one of these categories, you will receive a grade of 1 for the assignment in Blackboard with an explanation of why the essay cannot be graded. You will have three days from the moment the 1 appears to correct the problem and resubmit. If a student fails to resubmit within three days or the resubmission is still unacceptable, the assignment will receive a grade of 0. The new submission must be submitted in the Blackboard column labeled unacceptable submission redo. Students may redo an unacceptable submission only one time. Further unacceptable submissions will result in a grade of 0. *Please note that if assignment grades are being returned less than three days before the last day of ATC classes (April 26th), unacceptable submissions will receive a grade of 0 with no option for resubmission. 11.) Final Exams will take place the week of April 25th. The exam for this class will be administered online for all students, though hybrid students will be required to attend class on that day as usual. Details will be provided closer to the exam date. 12.)
