School Wide Management System – Cub Cash

Having a great school wide behavior system is crucial to our school and classroom running smoothly. In this behavior system, we will have incentives and consequences. Besides verbal praise and encouragement, the school wide behavior system will also have Cub Cash. In this behavior system, any staff member at the school can reward the students with Cub Cash for being respectful, responsible and safe. Furthermore, in the classroom, Cub Cash can be earned by staying on task, following the classroom expectations, and being a kind student throughout the school day. However, if a student is not willing to follow the above PAWsome Expectations, a consequence will take place. Students will have the opportunity at the end of each week, to be in a drawing for a weekly prize given by the administration, and to cash in their Cub Cash for different prizes in the classroom. It can be important to teach and remind students that they will not receive “Cub Cash” if they ask for it. When the student, teacher, and the parents work together, positive results are achieved.

Communication - Class Dojo and the Agenda

This year, we can communicate two different ways, by using Class Dojo and the Clearwater Agenda. I will send a Class Dojo letter home with your child on the first day of school. Please follow the directions on the letter, and we will be able to message each other using a smartphone, computer, or tablet. Another way we can communicate is by using the Clearwater Agenda. This agenda will allow for an open line of communication between you, your child, and me.

Homework Policy:  Each student will have a homework folder that they will bring home Monday-Thursday. Homework will consist of a math worksheet, phonics worksheet, and completion of 15 minutes of daily reading. When we begin studying spelling and sight words, it is strongly encouraged that you help your student study these words for weekly assessments. Later in the school year, your student will receive decodable readers (one/week) which they will take home and have homework assignments that go along with the book for that week. Homework is a very important part of learning since it is a reinforcement of classwork.  I encourage you to help your child with his/her homework and check over it after it is completed, but he/she should be able to complete the homework without much assistance.  Choosing a specific location in your house for homework can help promote good study habits. A new newsletter with new homework will be placed in your child’s homework folder each Monday morning.

Grading Policy:  Each Wednesday your child will receive their graded papers in their Graded Papers Folder.  The tests should be reviewed, signed and retuned back to school on Thursday.  Numerical grades will be given in Reading and Math, while an MS (meeting standards), MPS (making progress towards the standards) or NMP (not making progress towards the standards) will be given in Language Arts, Science, Health, Social Studies and Handwriting.

Agenda Information:  Each student will be given a Clearwater Elementary Agenda and should bring it to school every day.  This agenda will allow for an open line of communication between you, your child, and me. The agenda is set up like a weekly planner/calendar with spaces to write daily.  After you have checked both your child’s homework folder and agenda, please sign next to your child’s J or behavior note.  The agenda will be checked daily.

    First Grade Grading System

Our grading system for first grade this year is as follows:

    • Reading: weekly skills assessments

    • Math: weekly skills assessments

    • ELA: composition, spelling tests, grammar tests

Grading:  In Reading, the weekly skills assessments and benchmark tests will be averaged together.  In Math, the weekly skills assessments and unit tests will be averaged together. In ELA, composition will make up 40% of your child’s grade.  Grammar will make up 40% and spelling will make up 20% of your child’s grade. All graded work will be sent home on Wednesday in a blue Graded Papers Folder. Parents should review, sign and return all of the tests in the blue folder on Thursday.

Handwriting, Social Studies and Science/Health:  These subject areas will receive a grade of (MS) Meeting Standards, (MPS) Making Progress Towards Standards, and (NMP) Not Making Progress Towards Standards. This is based upon effort, participation and/or overall mastery.
