    Description:

Combining a study of American government and politics with an in-depth study of an individual’s rights under the Constitution, this course involves discussion, problem solving, and role playing simulations. The South Carolina Social Studies Standards will serve as a guide for the content of the course.

    Goals:

    • Demonstrate an understanding of US Government- its origins and functions
    • Demonstrate an understanding of how the Constitution continues to shape the country
    • Develop the skills necessary to become contributing members of society

    Textbook:

    • United States Government and Democracy, McGraw Hill, 2016
    • United States Economics, McGraw Hill, 2016

    Materials:

    • 1 3 ring-binder
    • Paper/pencil
    • Highlighters (optional as classroom supplies are not to be shared)
    • Students may be asked to watch televised events and/or access websites at home. If it will be an issue, the student needs to let the teacher know ASAP. The teacher will inform them of such assignments with as much advance notice as possible.

    Absence/Late Assignments:

When absent, the student must check Schoology for any missed work. If an assignment is due the date of absence, it must be turned in on the day of returning to school; otherwise it would be considered late. Late assignment grades will be reduced by 10% with a maximum of 40%.

    Notebook Guidelines:

At the end of each unit, students will turn in their notebooks for a grade, up to 100 points. Points will be deducted for not following notebook guidelines. Late notebooks will be accepted once per semester for 30% grade reduction.  After the notebook is graded, a student cannot go back and correct it for a better grade.

    School Procedures:

Tardies- Students who arrive after the tardy bell rings will be marked “tardy” in PowerSchool. Exceptions are for students who have a pass from a teacher or office.

    Classroom Procedures:

Bell Work- Each day, there will be 2-3 questions for the students to answer upon entering the room. After 5 minutes, it will no longer be accepted. In order to get full credit, students must have made a good-faith effort on the open ended questions.
