• Speech Activities During Covid 19 School Closure

    Dear Parents,

I will post links to videos and songs that your child is familiar with here.  Imitating and completing motions in time to music develops skills that are also used for speech and language.  Most of these are songs that we sing every week during push in language lessons.  These music/movement activities give your child practice and exposure with basic concepts, vocabulary, speech sounds, and motor skills.  Please sing and participate in the music with your child to encourage them to participate.

Please note: I've added a page just for speech sound practice activities (see side bar).  I'm also adding videos that go with the Early Learning SPED Packet stories.  These activities will be on the Resources Page.

Who Let The Letters Out - with Sounds In Motion.

Let your child imitate the motions and try to sing the speech sounds with the song.

It's A Very Simple Dance To Do

Your child should be familiar with the song and motions. We sing and act out the song in class, but the video is new. The kids are not used to seeing visuals with this song, but hopefully the visuals will help cue them to do the motions also. Please encourage your child to do the motions with you and imitate the call and response format.

Listen to the months of the year!
Practice moving one arm at a time!
Practice moving your arm across to the other side of your body!
What body parts will you touch? shoulders, ears, hips!
Where will your hands move? in front, behind, across!
What motion will you do with your hand? turn over!
What motion will your body do? turn around!

Vowel Sound Song

We sing this song while doing the motions that go with the vowel sounds. Unfortunately this video does not show the motions, but your child may remember and know some of them. I will work on getting a version that shows the motions, so you will know what they are too. Right now your child can practice imitating the vowel sounds with the song in a call and response format.

Yes/No Song

We have practiced answering yes/no questions using this song, which was made by a Speech Pathologist in our district. If you have a core language board with pic/syms for yes and no, your child can practice telling the answer by pointing to yes/no or by answering verbally.

"My Turn" song

Use this song to practice using a core board to communicate or even just to practice word and concept recognition. You should have a LAMP core board like the one shown in the video in your packet. Can you use it and point to the words you hear in the song. Parents you can help young children do this hand over hand as they get the idea. The LAMP board can also be found on the resources page.

One Little Finger

Children can imitate the actions to identify body parts, practice the concepts 'up' and 'down', and practice moving one finger separately from the rest of the hand. If you have a core board with 'up' and 'down', help your child point to 'up' and 'down' when these words come up in the song.

Over In The Meadow

This is a song version of the story Over in the Meadow. This version is based on the text and animals used in the book version by Ezra Jack Keats. This song/story targets number concepts, actions, and who/where questions. I will be adding more activities related to this story soon.
