Michelle Hughes Named Teacher Of The Year

Congratulations to Michelle Hughes for being named our 2023 Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Hughes teaches Algebra 2 and AP Calculus at Aiken Scholars Academy. She has been in education for 23 years and has been a part of the ASA faculty since January of 2020. Mrs. Hughes loves all types of math problems and feels that she is blessed daily with the opportunity to share that love of math with her students. She states "I also enjoy the fact that working with high school students is never boring. I believe I learn just as much from them daily as they do from me."

Principal Martha Messick had this to say, "Mrs. Hughes is one of the best teachers I have had the joy of working with over the last 20 years. She is innovative and diligently works to improve her craft for the betterment of her students. As a mathematics teacher, she is a master at student engagement and ensuring they understand the "why" and not just "how" to solve problems. She is a valuable member of our team and this honor is well-deserved!"

In her spare time, Mrs. Hughes enjoys being with her family and exploring new activities in Aiken, like walks in Hitchcock woods. She really likes any activity that allows her to be outside and appreciate the beautiful warm weather. Mrs. Hughes can also be found entertained by a good book, a challenging math puzzle, or a funny movie. If she wasn't teaching, she would work as an actuary, although she is certain she would miss the interaction with students too much. Mrs. Hughes is now in the running for Ï㽶ӰÊÓ Teacher of the Year.
