Students had to prepare an audition including playing seven memorized scales in two minutes, a memorized chromatic scale in one minute over the range of their instrument, five Italian music terms selected from a list of 45 terms, a prepared prescribed one-minute solo, and read and play two pieces at sight that they have never seen before. Students audition first at the Region level and those with the top scores on their instrument are invited back for a call-back audition with all of the top Region students from across the state. The final audition takes only the top 4-24 musicians (depending on instrument) in the state.
