Wagener-Salley's Cameron Davis Named Player of the Week

Wagener-Salley’s Cameron Davis returned to the sideline after a fourth-quarter fumble in a tight game, turned to head coach Willie Fox and couldn’t hide his disappointment.

Here we go again.

His feeling of déjà vu peeled off a fresh scab from just three weeks before. Leading Denmark-Olar by 8 with 7 minutes remaining, Davis threw an interception that was returned for the tying touchdown then fumbled on the next series to set up the go-ahead score in a stunning 50-42 loss.

Now, in a game against Blackville-Hilda that determined who would be Region 3-A’s No. 4 or 5 seed, it looked like another win was slipping away from the War Eagles.

Fox was having none of it. He corrected Davis and told him, no, he’d get back on the field and make the play to win the game. Davis intercepted a pass a few plays later, scored a touchdown and caught the two-point conversion to ice a 46-36 win in perhaps the season’s most impressive individual performance.

“That was really cool just to see him kind of grow up a little bit, mature, bounce back and have that next-play mentality,” Fox said.

Davis’ final stat line for the night included 320 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 45 carries, the two-point conversion and two interceptions while playing every snap on defense. The do-everything junior got stronger throughout the game despite playing at less than 100%, and he left no doubt that he’d be the Aiken Standard Player of the Week.
