What is it? 

Battle of the Books is a reading competition designed to improve reading and comprehension while building enthusiasm for reading using a fun and unique compeition format. Students will compete in teams to demonstrate their knowledge of 10 preselected books. 

Who can compete? 

All NEMS students are eligible to compete. More eligibilty requirements will be posted after initial sign ups in the fall.  

Battle of the Books Information

Students are encouraged to keep a Battle of the Books notebook with notes about the books they have read. 

Practice times will be determined once school starts. 

School competition is tentatively scheduled for February 2024. The champion of the school competition will go on to compete at the district battle tentatively scheduled for March 2024. 

This year's books have been carefully selected and are part of the 2023 - 2024 South Carolina Junior Book Award Nominees. These books include a variety of genres, reading levels, and themes. Appealing to reluctant as well as enthusiastic and mature readers, all Battle of the Books selections are available for check out through the school library as well as the public library. There is no cost to participate.
