Aiken Elementary School has a long history of providing excellence in education for the school children of Aiken, South Carolina. The school was founded in 1890 as a private school known as the Aiken Institute. The Aiken Institute was acquired by the Aiken County School District and later became a public school serving students in all grades. In 1937, a new public high school was built and the older students moved from The Aiken Institute to the new facility. This new building later housed Aiken Junior High and eventually became Laurens Street Elementary. At this time, The Aiken Institute became known as Aiken Elementary School. Both the Laurens Street and Aiken Elementary buildings became obsolete as elementary schools and in 1986 a state of the art facility was built. Laurens Street and Aiken Elementary student bodies and faculties were combined and began classes in the new school in April of 1986. In 1990, the old Aiken Elementary School, formally known as The Aiken Institute, became the Aiken County Public Library.
