Behavior Expectations

  • Our schoolwide expectations are:

    1. Be respectful.

    2. Be responsible.

    3. Be safe.

Our classroom expectations build on our schoolwide expectations.  Our classroom expectations are:

    1. Be respectful.

    2. Be responsible.

    3. Be safe.

    4. Be cooperative.

    5. Be positive.

Some of our classroom procedures regarding our expectations include:

    1. End of the day choices: We work really hard in kindergarten and I keep the children very busy! Therefore, I allow the children the chance to choose an activity (we call it making choices) at the end of each day.  If students stay busy and on task throughout the morning, they will have the opportunity to make choices first.  If they were not on task, they will have to finish their morning activities before they can make their choices.
    2. Time to think: If students are spotted making poor choices (for minor things), they may be asked to take a break at the star table to think about their choices or settle down with some calming activities. If the behavior persists, we’ll write a quick note for you so that you can speak to your child about their choices at home.  If we need to discuss your child’s choices further, we’ll call or schedule a meeting.
    3. Encouragement:When students are spotted making positive choices, we celebrate it! We reward their principled behavior with acts of encouragement that you may hear about, like wearing “Smarty Beads”, getting “Sweet Spots”, earning some extra choice time, and other fun treats.  Be sure to celebrate with your child when they tell you about earning these treats!
    4. A stripe on our class zebra: When the whole class makes especially positive choices, we will add a stripe to our class zebra. When the zebra is filled, the class will participate in a celebration. Filling the zebra takes awhile, so the reward is very special!

If we need to talk about your child's behavior, I'll be sure to contact you-whether it's to work on making better choices or to celebrate their great choices!  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
