Emergency & Fire Management

  • Developed in partnership with the S.C. Fire Academy, S.C. State Firefighters’ Association, the State Department of Education, and local school districts, this unique program enables high-school students to prepare for professional firefighter certification. Students who successfully pass the course and the national certification exams become eligible for certification on their 18th birthday. With advanced approval, their certifications can also be applied toward a college degree.

    The Aiken County Career & Technology Center has an Introduction to Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security course designed for 10th grade students; Basic Fire Fighter I course designed for 11th grade students; and Advanced Fire Fighter II course designed for 12th grade students to help prepare students to enter a career within the Emergency and Fire Management field.

    Using online and technology resources training programs and Instructor lead training on many topics; students complete an online independent study portion while participating in face-to-face cognitive and skill development sessions. The online portion also includes competency testing through online chapter/module tests. Student must participate in instructor-led review and skill development sessions where the skills are taught, practiced, and evaluated.

    Those students who successfully compete all training and prerequisites certifications have the opportunity to challenge the Fire Fighter I & II Certification with the South Carolina Fire Academy.

Emergency & Fire Management Program Courses

  • Introduction to Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security (Course Code: 6505 – 1 credit)

    Optional This course provides basic career information in Public Safety including Corrections, Emergency and Fire Management, Security and Protection, Law Enforcement, and Legal Services. Additionally students will develop a personal plan for a career in Public Safety.

    Fire Fighter 1 (651400CD – 2 credits)

    PREREQUISITES: GPA 2.0 or higher in English, Math, and Science

    Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of safety in the Emergency and Fire Services. Students will develop a basic understanding of First Aid, CPR, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, and Fundamentals of Fire Fighting through the Fire Fighter 1 level. 

    Opportunity to challenge the Fire Fighter I certification with the South Carolina Fire Academy if all prerequisites are complete.

    Fire Fighter 2 (651500CD – 2 credits)

    PREREQUISITES: Fire Fighter 1 course ablove (min. grade 77), Teacher Recommendation, GPA 2.0 or higher in English, Math, and Science.

    Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Incident Command System; state laws in the use and operation of emergency vehicle; how the EMS system works; Emergency Medical Responder; and knowledge of Fire Suppression to the Fire Fighting 2 level.

    Opportunity to challenge the Fire Fighter II certification with the South Carolina Fire Academy if all prerequisites are complete
