    Who are the Multilingual Learners?

Differentiation in our Multilingual Learners classroom

Differentiation has been defined as an approach to teaching that attempts to ensure that all students learn well, despite their many differences. One reason why differentiation is so important in our ML classroom is that the learners are so varied! They have different educational backgrounds, different motivations, interests, learning styles, ages, aptitudes, abilities, learning styles, learning difficulties, and they have different levels of English language proficiency.

Do you see all the learning opportunities these differences create? They make learners feel valued as individuals, they enable all learners to achieve and progress, they promote tolerance and appreciation of differences, and they make teaching multidimensional.

My goal is that each student increases his/her levels of English language proficiency in all the four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and gains the ability to meet the same standards set for native English speakers. This goal steers my daily language, vocabulary, and literacy instruction.

I always tell my students that they are the best. I set high expectations for them and they work very hard each and every day to acquire more of the English language and apply that learning in their classroom and every day life.
