• ELA Block

My ELA block is a combination of phonics, grammar, spelling, reading skills, and writing instruction.  We will primarily use the Fountas and Pinnell system for the majority of these lessons.  Within this block, your child will be reading and writing and practicing the skills taught during the instruction portion of the lesson.  I will also work with guided reading groups on each child's individual reading level to set goals and help students grow in reading and writing.

    • Reading Tests

Your child will have cold comprehension tests every other week.  On these tests, students will read passages that they have never read and answer different types of comprehension questions about those stories.

    • Nightly Reading

We are working on building a reading life at school and at home.  Please encourage your child to read nightly.  Make sure to ask questions about what they are reading.

      Narrative Writing

We will be working on learning all about narrative writing for the first 4 weeks of school.  We will integrate our SS curriculum into our narrative by writing about traveling to their dream vacation.  Encourage your child to write about their daily life in a journal.  This will help them develop as a writer.

      Grammar

We will be doing weekly grammar sheets this year.  We will complete this sheet Monday-Thursday in class.   Then on Friday's we will take a quiz on those same type skills.  These sheets also incorporate vocabulary words using prefixes and suffixes.  Please review and studythese sheets for those Friday quizzes.

      Spelling

A spelling list and a weekly activity sheet will be sent home on Monday of each week.  Students are expected to practice those words and turn in the completed activity sheet each Friday.  We will practice these words in class and during our station time.  A spelling test will be given each Friday on those words.
