Chief Self is originally from Birmingham, Alabama, and was the Naval Science Instructor at Midland Valley High School from 2012-2022.  He teaches first year Naval Science and coaches the NJROTC rifle, academic, drone, and orienteering teams.  He retired from the Navy in September of 2011 as a Chief Hospital Corpsman with twenty-three and a half years of Naval service.  As a Corpsman, Chief Self served as an Aviation Medical Technician, Aerospace Physiology Instructor, and Aviation Water Survival Instructor.  He has served at Navy and Army hospitals (Naval Hospital Oakland, California and Letterman Army Medical Center, Presidio of San Francisco), aircraft carriers (Saratoga and Enterprise), Aviation Survival Training Centers (NAS Pensacola and MCAS Cherry Point), Second Marine Aircraft Wing of the U.S. Marine Corps (MCAS Cherry Point), and the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He has taught or led young people in various capacities since 1991:  Young Marines, church youth groups, Sunday School, and an elementary school mentorship program in Pensacola, Florida.  Chief Self also served as the Cadre Sergeant Major for Chamberlain-Hunt Academy in Port Gibson, Mississippi for the 2011-2012 school year.

He holds the following Naval qualifications:  Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist (Air Combat Element), 2005; Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist, 1994; and Master Training Specialist, 1999.  He has been married to Sheila since 1989 and they have four grown children, two daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren.
