This is an advanced, honors level art class for students who are motivated to expand their knowledge in the visual arts. Students will complete works of art independently with personal goals agreed upon by the student and teacher. The overall goal of the class is to develop a strong portfolio of work that showcases the depth and breadth of each student as an artist. The focus of the class can have a single overall goal or several smaller, quarterly goals. The class will build on the skills and techniques learned in the lower-level art classes. Students will practice their technical skills and start to build a personal style of art. The class will focus on the studio experience. That experience will include practice of previous skills, exposure to new techniques, and exploring the reasons and motivations behind creating art. In addition to the “how” and “why” of making art, students will practice art criticism and explore art history. Students will be required to enter various art competitions throughout the year. A sketchbook will be kept to document their journey of artistic discoveries. This course will require self-motivation and the ability to meet strict deadlines.
