• 2023-2024 School Year:

    First grade is an exciting year of student growth.  Our expectation is that every student becomes a responsible learner and a leader. 

    Literacy Block:

    In first grade, we follow the Aiken County model for teaching literacy.? We have a 90 minute block of time to read together as a class (shared reading) and work?in?small groups with the teacher (guided reading).? We also use this time to work in literacy centers, read individually, and read with partners.? Writing and sharing is also a part of this block of time.?? 

    Our Focus:  Independent Fluent Readers building on comprehension, vocabulary and stamina 

    Math:?? 

    In math,?we provide both whole?class?and small group instruction.? We use our math books, the Smartboard, and manipulatives to help students?demonstrate comprehension of the standards.? We teach these standards following the Aiken County Pacing Guide. 
    Our Focus:  Adding, Subtraction, Geometry, Place Value, and Measurement (time/money) 

    Social Studies: 

    In social studies, we follow the Aiken County Pacing Guide.? Some of our topics of study include citizenship, communities, maps, famous Americans, and world cultures. 

    Our Focus:  Map Skills, Government and Leaders, Cultures and Geography 

    Science: 

    In science, we also follow the Aiken County Pacing Guide.? Some of our topics include light and shadows, the moon and stars, and natural resources. 

    Our Focus:  Plants, Light and Shadow, Sun and Moon, Rocks and Soil
