    2nd Grade ELA Course Description

Second grade teachers should work towards creating a high progress literacy environment for all students. A High Progress Literacy Environment Rubric can be found as an attachment under the Course Description. The second grade ELA curriculum builds independent learners through the Reading and Writing Workshop instructional framework that encompasses a balanced literacy approach. The instructional framework consists of mini-lesson, work time: guided reading/small group instruction, conferencing, and closure/reflection. During their time in second grade, students are exposed to a variety of age- appropriate texts that push them to build stamina and grow into critical thinkers.

The following Overarching Concepts serve as fundamental components to all units of instruction for 2nd grade ELA students.

    • Retell the central idea and key details in a text
    • Ask and answer literal and inferential questions to demonstrate understanding of a text; use specific details to make inferences and draw conclusions in texts
    • Acquire and use general academic and domain-specific words and phrases acquired through talk and text; identify nuances of words and phrases.
    • Use various text structures and locate key facts and information and explain the relationship between these features and the text
    • Generate, research, and compose a variety of writing

Through collaborative, inquiry-based learning experiences students will be motivated to become actively engaged lifelong readers, writers, communicators, and thinkers.

The second grade SC ELA state standards support the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate (attached under the Course Description). The following world class skills are developed throughout the grade 2 ELA curriculum:

    • Creativity and Innovation
    • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
    • Collaboration and Teamwork
    • Communication
    • Information
    • Media and Technology
    • Knowing How to Learn

Throughout the instructional day, students should be learning within a classroom environment that allows them to independently and collaboratively engage in the inquiry process. Students should

    • Formulate relevant, self-generated questions based on interests and/or needs that can be investigated.
    • Transact with texts to formulate questions, propose explanations, and consider alternative views and multiple perspectives.
    • Construct knowledge, applying disciplinary concepts and tools (dictionaries, maps, calculators, rulers, timelines, texts, multimedia sources, magnifying lens, journals, etc.) to build deeper understanding of the world through exploration, collaboration, and analysis.
    • Synthesize integrated information to share learning and/or take action.
    • Reflect throughout the inquiry process to assess metacognition, broaden understanding, and guide actions, both individually and collaboratively. (Reflect on learning and goals, etc.)

     2nd Grade Math Overview

Students will develop conceptual understandings of measurement (to include money and time), drawing conclusions from a variety of graphs, and place value through 999. This understanding will lead to students developing strategies for addition and subtraction based on place value. In 3rd grade, students will then use knowledge of place value to round numbers to nearest 10’s and 100’s. They will also learn to multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 using knowledge of place value. It is important that students develop place value concepts to use in rounding as well as for addition/subtraction.

    Overarching Concepts

    Place value

    Counting by 10's and 100's to 1,000

    Partitioning shapes

    Creating and analyzing graphs

    Measurement (including time/money)

    Addition/Subtraction strategies

    Fluency with addition and subtraction

Real-world/story problems using addition and subtraction through 99 with unknowns in all positions

    Course Outline

Quarter 1: Data Analysis, Place Value/Number Sense and Base Ten

    Quarter 2: Time & Place Value/NSBT Part I

Quarter 3: Place Value/NSBT Part II & Algebraic Thinking and Operations

Quarter 4: Money, Shapes, & Measurement

    2nd Grade Science Overview

The South Carolina Academic Standards and Performance Indicators are the basis for the development of knowledge for the second grade science curriculum. The standards and indicators are emphasized using science and engineering practices through various laboratory investigations. In the second grade science class, students are expected to research, explore, and apply their knowledge. Through collaborative, inquiry-based investigations, students are motivated to become actively engaged, life-long readers, writers, and thinkers.

At the conclusion of second grade, students will grow in their scientific literacy by reading, writing, communicating, and thinking like scientists. Students will also gain the knowledge, hands-on experiences, and confidence to pose questions about the science that is present all around them.

The second General Topics of the second grade curriculum include:

    · Weather

    · Animals and their environments

    · Properties of solids and liquids

    · The effects pushes and pulls

The following Overarching Concepts are an essential component to all units of instruction in second grade science:

    · Construct explanations of how the structures of animals help them survive and grow in their environment.

    · Analyze and interpret data of daily and seasonal weather patterns.

    · Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information of the observable properties of solids and liquids, and the special properties of magnets.

    · Plan and conduct investigations to demonstrate an understanding of the effects of pushes, pulls, and friction on the motion of objects, as well as engage in scientific argument from the evidence.

    2nd Grade Health Overview

Instruction will include concepts and skills related to the following SC state standards:

This course includes Erin's Law lessons as a resource however, delivery of these lessons should be coordinated by the school guidance counselor.

Standard 1 The student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion to enhance health.

Standard 2 The student will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.

Standard 3 The student will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

Standard 4 The student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 5 The student will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

Standard 6 The student will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

Standard 7 The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and to avoid or reduce health risks.

Standard 8 The student will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and consumer health.
