2nd Grade

Second grade is an exciting year of student growth. Our expectation is that every student becomes a responsible learner and a leader.

  • Reading:

In second grade, our reading program will  incorporate a variety of components.  Students will participate in Whole Group Instruction, Guided Reading Groups with me, and Independent Reading.  ?

Our Focus: “Growing” Independent Fluent Readers with strong comprehension, vocabulary and stamina.

    Independent Reading:

Students will be accountable for silent reading in our classroom.  Students will have time to read when not in guided reading groups, and when their work is finished early.

    Writing:

Students will be writing every day.  They will learn and practice all the steps to the writing process.  Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to share their writing.

    Math:??

In math,?we provide whole?group and small group instruction.? We use our math textbook which focuses on problem solving, as well as calculating answers. Being able to explain your thinking in writing is a higher-level skill and shows deeper understanding.  We also use the Clear Touch Board and manipulatives to help students demonstrate comprehension of the state standards.? It is vital that all students memorize their addition and subtraction math facts to develop fluency.  I encourage them to study at home often.

Our Focus: Addition, Subtraction, Data Analysis, Geometry, Place Value, Algebra and Measurement (time/money)

    Social Studies:

In social studies, some of our topics of study include communities; roles of local leaders; maps; cultures and traditions; regions; government structures; goods and services, and changes over time.

    Science:

In science, there will be many hands-on experiences to help the students grasp abstract concepts.? Some of our topics of study include weather; animals; matter; force and motion; pushes and pulls; solids, liquids, and gases; and health.

    Computer Requirements:

Each week, students are required to complete two different programs, Dreambox and Imagine Learning.  They are both on our Class Clever page.

DREAMBOX - Students must complete 10 math lessons per week.

IMAGINE LEARNING - Students must complete 75 minutes on reading skills per week.

    Homework:

Monday through Thursday your child will have homework.  This provides an opportunity for you to work with and witness your child's growth in reading, math and spelling.  Look for specific information about homework in your child's agenda and in Class Dojo notes.
