    Course Description:

    READ 180 Universal is an intensive reading intervention program for students who are reading below grade level. The program is designed to meet the needs of struggling readers through teacher-directed lessons, adaptive software, age-appropriate, high-interest nonfiction and fiction texts, and data-driven differentiation. READ 180 engages students in learning and motivates them to take ownership and accountability for their learning and achieve reading progress and success.

     Student Supplies:     

    • 1 inch binder
    • Paper
    • Pencils/pens
    • *(Optional) headphones or ear buds WITH A MICROPHONE

     Extra Help:

                Extra help is available after school. 

     Classroom Expectations:

    • Follow all school rules
    • Have respect for yourself and others at all times
    • Bring all needed materials to class each day

     Tardy Policy:

    Students need to be in the classroom when the bell rings and when the door is closed.

    You must have your agenda signed to leave class for any reason.  Try to use the restroom or get water before class starts as you are only allowed to leave for emergencies. 

    Class Set Up:

    Class roster holds a maximum of 18 students. Students will alternate daily within three set learning stations.

    • Small group- Students receive individualized, teacher-led instruction to help them master reading skills and strategies.
    • Independent Reading- Students select novels on their reading level and read them at their own pace in a comfortable, quiet environment. Students will record their progress and will take Reading Counts tests as they complete each novel. Our goal is to read 5-10 independent novels throughout the course. 
    • Instructional Technology- Students will receive intensive, individualized instruction in reading, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. Students will work through an adaptive computer-guided program which tracks goals and progress.

     

    GRADING PROCEDURES
    Grades are based on the Scholastic Read180/System44 model.  The grade is divided into four parts, as outlined below. 

    • Small Group Work (30% of grade) – This portion of student's grade includes unit mid and final tests for units completed within ReaL textbook.
    • Scholastic Read180/System44 Software (30% of grade) - This grade consists of all activity on the instructional software which is at the heart of Read180/System44.  This computer program individualizes instruction for each student who signs in.  This is an integral part of the program.  This grade also includes the student’s oral fluency grade.
    • Independent/Modeled Reading (30% of grade) – This grade consists of reading comprehension quizzes that each student must complete-minimum 4 per nine-week period. These quizzes must include at least one quiz covering a novel the student has completed, and 3 ERead quizzes covering articles student has read within the Read180 site.
    • Productive Participation (10% of grade) -  This grade comprises of being on task, following instructions, proper transitioning, working quietly and independently, participating in group discussion, and using materials responsibly. Participation also includes completing various assignments provided by the teacher, including reading logs, graphic organizers, and quick writes.
