Dear Parents,
I am looking forward to having your son/daughter in my class this year. I will do my best not only to teach Economics, but also to prepare your teenager for high school and beyond. Students will get the most out of this course if they are prepared for class each day. The textbook is especially important, for we will be covering many of the text exercises in class. Students have the option of checking out a hard copy text book from the bookroom, or using the online version located at Clever.com. Students are expected to bring loose-leaf notebook and a writing instrument to class every day. (Please bring extra as we will not be borrowing)
It is very important that you and your student remember that Economics is a semester class and as we are now on block schedule, we will complete the class in NINE WEEKS! Students will need to study daily as we will test frequently (weekly).
I believe that homework is an essential part of the learning process as it reinforces ideas presented in class. If there are no written assignments, students are expected to review class notes and reading assignments. Please check schoology for assignments.
Course Objectives: Economics will include experiences that provide for the study of production, distribution, and consumption to allow the learner to demonstrate an understanding of scarcity and choice, demand and supply, the world of work, free enterprise economy, economic institutions, government, national economy and trade.
Course Requirements: Essential ingredients for students’ success in this course are a positive attitude and putting forth their best quality work. An open mind and a willingness to accept differences in others will be necessary in order for you to gain the most from this course. Course work will include extensive reading, writing, and projects.
Materials: To be a success in this class it is essential that you bring your materials to class EVERYDAY.
White, college-ruled loose-leaf paper.
Pens and at least one #2 pencil.
Text book – Understanding Economics
(Remember – Economics 101 – Nothing in life is free - YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BORROW ANY SUPPLIES -BRING EXTRA!!!!)
Course Grading: Grading will occur on a variety of assignments, including writing, discussion responses, oral presentations, group work, outside reading, tests, presentations, and participation. The school grading system outlined in the student handbook will be strictly adhered to in this course.
Grading Scale: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C= 70-89; D=60-69; F=0-59
Please do not hesitate to ask me questions or request any additional help if you need it. You need this course to graduate. The percentages used to derive class averages each 9 weeks will be as follows:
Chapter Tests/ Major Projects 60%
Classwork/homework/quizzes 40%
_____________________________________________________________
` TOTAL 100%
Attendance: There will be a “Bell Ringer” on the board daily. While you are working, attendance will be taken and homework will be checked.
Make-up work: You have as many days to make up the work as you have been “excused” for your absence (See Student Handbook). REMEMBER: I will not pursue about your missed work; you must check schoology, check with fellow students, or get any notes or explanations from a trusted classmate.
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you have missed. Students excused for school-sponsored activities will be expected to complete work before the absence for the activity.
Trades: Being on time means being in your seat when the bell rings (not running through the door as it rings!). The door will be closed after the tardy bell rings. If you come after the door is shut, you must have a tardy pass to be admitted. Do not shake the door to make your presence known.
DISCIPLINE: This will comply with North Augusta High School’s Student Handbook and Aiken County’s Code of Conduct. I expect you to behave in an acceptable manner.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year. If your teen works hard, she/he WILL succeed. I am always willing to help students achieve success in my class, but they must take the responsibility to try their best. Good grades are attainable for every student. Let’s have a GREAT year!
